Seoul Portrait Concert in Review

What a pleasure it was to hear a concert of my chamber music last night at MUSICSPACE GF 중력장 in Seoul! The concert featured five of my solo and duo works for violin and piano played by two of my favorite musicians, violinist Euna Kim and pianist Eunmi Ko. This was my first time at MUSICSPACE GF 중력장, and I found it to be an inviting and intimate chamber venue in an interesting part of the city. There was a very good turnout for the concert, including a few very old friends I haven’t seen in many years, as well as quite a number of new faces. It always feels good to connect with new music lovers wherever I go in the world.

For this program, Euna played my solo work, immaus, from 2004, along with my very recent Fragile Remembrance, from 2023. For her part, Eunmi played Inner Truth (a work she toured with when I wrote it for her in 2018), as well as two selections of an ongoing set of miniatures inspired by my teachers, appropriately called Selfies. The program also included Rise, for violin and piano, a piece I wrote for and premiered at my senior undergraduate violin recital at Eastman. It’s a curious experience to hear very old works like this. You can see at once what you’d do differently today and also the things from way back that still interest you or haunt you, depending on your perspective.

Thanks again to my beloved performers and for the supportive and receptive audience!

This concert was recorded on video, and I expect to share some of it here when it’s available. Stay tuned….

immaus in Petersburg, VA

My solo violin work, immaus, will be performed by violinist Emily Ilyes as part of the College Music Society Mid-Atlantic conference at Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA, March 20-22. I’m looking forward to hearing this and all the other performances and papers of my colleagues in March.
